Hardwood Kitchen Counter Tops - Good or Bad?

Looking for some advice on harwood kitchen counter tops. Am looking at kitchens for a new house, and like the look and feel of hardwood over granite, but I'm concerned about how it wears over time.

Have been told by some kitchen companies that they heavily laquer the counter top with several coats, similar to what would be done in a cafe or bar which makes it very resitant to staining etc, but what they tell you vs. reality ....

Anyone got experience of hardwood counter tops, and would you reccommend them..?

We have an iroko countertop, which my husband cut, fitted and finished himself. I would advise against heavy lacquering as it will wear unevenly and is hard to recreate. We opted for finishing with an oil (Liberon finishing oil) applied in several thin coats. Once in 6 months clear the worktop, lightly rub with fine steel wool and reapply the oil. This gives a good, food safe, waterproof and renewable coating. Our worktops still look new 8 years later.
