Happy Earth Day

Which should take priority? People or environment?

Really? 6.5 million people die each year from respiratory diseases, a good chunk of those caused by air pollution. Nearly 10 million die of cancer, air pollution causes some of that too. In total air pollution kills 5 million people every year. So far Covid19 may well be saving lives.

Which should take priority? People or environment?
HIV/AIDS kills 10 million people each year. In some countries it is the leading cause of death. There is no "people or environment" question there. It's simply a case of "you're poor so you're going to die". If is wasn't for the fantastic work done by George W Bush there would be millions more dying of AIDS each year. He literally saved the lives of tens of millions of people.

So, human activity is the main cause of human death in the world. It's also the main cause of environmental damage.
If we ate less meat there would be far less heart disease (the number one cause of death globally). People or environment? The two are inextricably linked.

Have you any proof that air pollution is a direct cause of death other than the usual media scare mongering?

I didn't think there was any doubters about the affects of air pollution at this stage, it's well documented!

How much of that air pollution is from diesel vehicles... which we were all encouraged to switch to because it was gentler on the planet...

Diesel is a big problem but diesel machines such as static generators and off-road vehicles like excavators are a bigger issue due to the fact that emissions legislation for road vehicles is much more stringent. The burning of wood and coal in open fires in developing countries is probably the biggest contributing factor to the total deaths globally. In much of the developing world electricity grids are not up to the job, or completely absent, so diesel generators supply much of the power. In sub-Saharan Africa they account for about 40% of all electricity generated. The environmental (and economic) impact of this is severe.
