Handheld puzzle/mind exercise device

No idea what these things are called but I need to get one as a christmas prezzie - these are the handheld thingys that are advertised on telly as improving the mental acuity of older people. I know nobody on AAM would have a need themselves for such a device, but perhaps, like me, have had to purchase one as a present, and thus be in a postion to offer an opinion...
 
Are there stand-alone devices that do the same thing - would rether not have to splash out on a DS?
 
If you're really cheap ..

look in the local supermarket for jars of Aero hot chocolate. Some have a free (rrp €15) handheld LCD screen toy that has memory games, Soduku, etc.
