Might be just tightened too much, purchased a car last year and had to go back in three times as handbrake issues, developed a sequel, then lack of power in handbrake as they loosened it too much, finally sorted. Our handbrake had started to stick and was told by dealership to reverse first to unlock it, dont force car forward as you'll do damage untill Id chance to pop into them.
Also was told to park the car in first gear or reverse if on a hill rather than use the handbrake but I like the security of the handbrake.
