Hi,

My husband has his own hackney and has a contract with CIE for a school run.

Obviously that finishes in June for the summer which means that we will have no set guaranteed income coming in from him.

He does work just in the hackney but there isn't a whole lot of work out there at the moment unless he works 12 or 13 hours a day 7 days a week.

Is he entitled to claim anythinng from the social welfare for the summer months?

Never knew that CIE provided taxis - Is this instead of providing a bus on the school transport scheme? Do you mind if I ask if they pay what's on the meter, or is there a negotiated price?

In rural areas many hackneys are mini busses and the school mini bus doubles as the bingo bus or bus going to football matches etc.

OP, Perhaps you can be creative about where you might be able to pick up some new business. For instance there are many summer camps run for children during the summer months and pick up/ drop off can be a problem parents. Your experience with the school transport scheme will stand to you in terms of insurances etc. Perhaps you could contact some of the summer camp organisers and make them an offer?

Some taxis are contracted to pick up special needs children from different catchment areas also.

Yes Paddy that is exactly it, he picks up kids with special needs who live in rural areas and bring them to school in the city. Conplainer, it's not charged buy the meter because hackney's don't have a meter in their car, as far as I know CIE pay by the mile, but ya it is a set ammount paid every month. ajapale that is a very good idea I hadn't thought of that, i'll have to get him to contact a few of these summer schemes in our area and see if anything is going.

Thanks for the suggestions all, greatly appricated.
