Habitat closing, awaiting delivery

Any advice/information for someone awaiting delivery from Habitat?

We paid nearly €1000 for furniture at Habitat's Dublin store a month ago (by Visa), and were told delivery would take 3-4 weeks, so had expected the units last week. Phoned twice during the week to enquire, and on both occasions were told that it seemed they had not yet been delivered to DHL, and somebody would get back to me. No one ever did -- And I guess I now know why.

We contacted Habitat to the customer enquiry e-mail address that was given out, and got the standard reply.

Does anyone know... is there any chance we will get a delivery? Any of our money back?? How long should we wait?? Should we now go north to IKEA instead, as we do need the furniture ( not to mention the money).

The NCA this morning hadn't even heard of Habitat, or that they were in liquidation, and could give little advice, other than going to the small claims court.

Visa has a "chargeback" office that would consider our claim, but we have to supply evidence of negotiation with the company, and that could take time to establish.

Advice and information appreciated

Thanks

My brother ordered a coach from Habitat at the start of last year. After four months it had not come. He contacted Habitat and eventually got to speak to someone (it took several calls) and said he urgently needed the coach as when buying it he had been told delivery would be within a couple of weeks. They told him delivery would be another four or five months due to prodution difficulties (!!!!!!) He said he need a coach - so they agreed to give him one until his new one was delivered. They gave him a different coach which he used until eventually six months later the new one was delivered - he had the temporary one ready for the delivery guys to take back. they said they knew nothing about it and couldn't take it. He contacted Habitat a few times, left messages, sent emails. He heard nothing - so gave up and now has two coaches!

If you paid by VISA you will get the money back. It happened to me seven years ago when I paid a couple of grand out for tiles and the company went into liquidaiton. Where possible, I always try to pay big purchases on the card, even if I have the cash, its just that extra security.

Thanks, MandaC, that's reassuring.
Did it take long to get the money back from Visa?

It took long enough from what I remember. I had almost given up on getting the money. VISA will try to give you the runaround too, so just be firm. You have been charged for goods that you have not received, or will not receive, so deal with it that way.

VISA can just do a chargeback from the company, like a credit against what they are paying to the company (VISA transactions will still be going through, as they only stopped trading on Saturday evening). I would ring VISA and put your query in writing pronto.

VISA told me to write in to the company too, before they processed my refund in the hope that the company would pay me back and they did not have to deal with it. About a year after it was all settled (funds back on VISA card), I got a cheque for the full amount from the Liquidator, as it turned out some of the Directors were forming new companies and wanted no bad blood.

We ordered a lovely frosted glass top office desk from Habitat in Galway at the weekend. We had €150 voucher so they took that and my husbands laser card details to cover the rest of the cost. I should have known something was wrong when the girl kept saying that we may not get it for 8 weeks as they were having problems with deliveries!! Thinking about it now, she was trying to put us off!

Anyway, I doubt if we're going to get the desk now, but I hope we get the €150 back. They don't seem to have taken the remainder off the laser card so I guess it could have been worse...
