i recently joined a gym payed part of the joining fee and as i was set to use direct debit sayed i would pay the rest when i confirmed bank details. within days i realised i no longer wanted to join this gym.i put this in writing, returned my membership card and gave them in 5 working days after signing the contract. i am no being pressured through phonecalls to give bank details. i thought i had a weeks grace within signing a contract to cancel does anyone no if this isnt the case?

There is a cooling off period for Distance Selling : [broken link removed]

But I would not worry too much about the gym they will give up eventually.

Did the OP mention distance selling?

No. He asked if there was a cooling off period, which there is not, as explained in the link. Leisure activities are not covered by the distant selling legislation, which allows a cooling off period. As for the gym, they may threaten things, but in the end of the day they will give up trying to collect the outstanding money. JS and the likes don’t want another run in with good old Joe.…

Although it may affect your credit rating?? I'm not sur eon this point but it might be worth looking into on the off chance

Hi dub2008,

Welcome to AAM.

There are many previous threads on gym membership and this is an example of same. If you run the search option on the main board you should find others.

The National Consumer Agency have this on gym membership also.

As the gym is not a member of the Irish Credit Bureau ([broken link removed]) they can only affect your credit rating by taking a court case and wining it. Since companies cannot use the small claims court this will cost them thousands, just to get a few hundred euro.
