ground cover plants

Hi all

I'm looking for some help in relation to planting. I have a new site and lots of ditchs! What I'm looking for is some kind of plant that will effectively take over the ditchs so that the weeds (or at least the bulk of them) are stopped from coming. Any recommendations?

Something reasonable and low maintenance would be good!

Thanks

Ned

Depends on the site/situation, i.e. sunny, dry, wet, shady, north-facing, your location in Ireland etc.

However, one unstoppable, native plant suitable for all the above situations, and spreads like wildfire, is the common ivy, hedera helix.

south facing site - on a hill in Cork. The site is very dry.

Don't really like the ivy.

I have "Vinca Minor" in some of my flowerbeds and everyone admires it. I have both the blue flower and the white flower and I also have some of the varigated leaf. It works great as groundcover. Never have to touch it.
