grit sand

Anyone know where I can purchase this? Can it be bought by the bag in the likes of Woodies etc or does it have to be ordered by the ton from builders providers? Any idea of cost?

What is "grit sand"? Do you mean "sharp sand" which is a washed sand most suitable for plastering as opposed to soft sand which is used to make mortar? Sharp and soft sand can be bought in bulk or some hardware stores will deliver it in 1 tonne dumpy bags.

I think it is also referred to as coarse sand, used for laying patio's.

No, that's another type of sand, called: "pin head sand", it has large round grains, like pin heads and is the correct sand for laying paving etc.
