Green Bike Scheme

Hi,

Wondering if anyone knows where I can get the details of the green bike tax break scheme ? My employer has offered to use it for me to get a bike and cycle to work. Yippee! But the only information I could get from it was from a bike retailer - can anyone give details or help me ?
Thanks, Sal

All the details you need are on this site. I've asked for an info pack to be sent out a few times but I've never received it.
When you are picking your bike make sure you include all the accessories you might need (lights/mud guards etc) You can include all these in the price of the bike/quote.

Hi guys.

I have read and looked into this but want to be certain how it works and as yet I'm not.

So far I know:
  • the employer buys the bike
  • the employee uses the bike
  • there is a tax incentive somewhere
  • Up to the value of €1000 per employee, all in, once every five years
But I'm unsure of how much of incentive there is. If there is an incentive for employer and employee or just the one.

Also, if there is a tax incentive: how does it work in practice?

Does the employee get the bike for free? Can the employer write off the money against their tax bill? If so, when and how long will this take?

I asked an accountant but they weren't sure. So they rang revenue and they didn't know either. Said they'd look it up and get back to him.

Anyone here taken up the scheme?

...The Government are promoting National Bike week ...

it operates similarly to the annual commuter passes i understand. the amount paid comes out of your gross income so you don't have to pay tax on it so it will depend on which tax rate you are on how much you 'save'. actually i give up, the FAQ on the site above explains it all quite clearly

the incentive is for both the employee and the employer,
in relation to the employee you can either get a gift of the bike and equipment which is tax free or you can ask your employer to buy the bike and deduct it from your gross pay.
the incentive for the employer is that they can write it off as a company expense against company profits
