Am heading to Gothenburg over Christmas. Any tips on places to go/ things to do/ good bars, restuarants etc.
Also haven't booked accommodation yet, any recommendations? Want somewhere nice but that doesn't break the bank!!

Was there two weeks ago. Fantastic place!! We stayed in the Raddison - very nice hotel.
In terms of bars and clubs etc. there is a place called the avenue where a lot of these are located.
A place we found which was great craic was the dancing dingo - good spot.

Anyway enjoy!!

You could check out Liseberg - big amusement park! [broken link removed]

It's alot of fun!!! It also has a Christmas market from around mid November: [broken link removed]

Also with more than 150 shops Nordstan Shopping Centre is Skandinavia's biggest shopping mall (in city centre)

Are you there for Christmas Day? Christmas Eve is the big day in Sweden, all the pubs etc are opened on Christmas Day its their equivalent of our St Stephens day.

Check out the following website, it's for a card esp for Gothenburg, excellant value, we used it tenfold when in Gothenburg last summer.
There is loads to pack in:
My favs included;

Paddan boat
Elfsborg fortress
Liseberg Amusement park
Universeum
Not to forget free public transport.

We opted for the 48 hour pass and had a ball!

Have you been to Liseberg? Is it recommended? Apparently not a huge amount of daylight when we're going so would it worth it to go for a few hours? Thx

Well I would recommend it.

It is in the city, quite close to the centre. It costs 60 SKK entry, about 6.50 euro, but is free with the Goteborg card.

So if you have the card, which I also recommend, it's free for you to take a look, even if you don't like it.

It has two rollercoasters, including an old wooden one, a Ferris wheel, and a good few other rides. Also a 3D cinema (IMAX??), that showed a nature film in 3D, that was impressive, and a bit scary.

The rides aren't cheap. A coupon is 15 SKK, about 1.60, and the top rides need 4 coupons. Most need 2 coupons.

Children should like the place, but if you have a lot of them, your wallet won't!

Hi Denise, just back from Gothenburg a few weeks ago and would highly recommend it as a great city break location. We stayed in the Scandic Europa, central location right beside the Nordstan shopping centre. We booked it online and paid a few weeks before we travelled and got a rate of 85 Euro per room per night. Sushi place across the road does great selection plates for a knock down price.

Nightlife was great, eat in the Ivy Grill on Saturday night, prices were very reasonable and the food was great ! recommend the Goats Cheese Salad for starters followed by the T-Bone all washed down with plenty of Champagne . Friday night eat in Corazon de la Noche on Avenyn, food was good.... went back the following afternoon for beer and tapas. Friday afternoon is a great time to go out in Gothenburg and the bars put on great free food to attract the afterwork crowd, great atmosphere... we bar hopped on Avenyn between Cafe Lipp and a few others directly across the street whose names I can't remember ..

Excet and Niva nightclubs, both on Avenyn are well worth a visit, stay open till 4.30 / 5 ish... only downside is that you have to queue to get in. FYI all clubs and also some pubs have cover charges to get in... about a tenner in most cases.

In summary a fantastic city, really friendly locals, very clean, prices are no more expensive than Dublin.... less in a lot of cases ..

Thanks for the great info seve. Just on net now looking at hotels. Where did you book your one through. A load of sites and they all seem to have different prices for the same hotel and would take ages to go through them all

From reading this... I've remembered how lovely it was so just booked another trip before Christmas. Can't wait!

Liseberg is great fun and should be very nicely decorated for the season thats in it! Should be a wonderful sight from the ferris wheel.. with all the lights etc.

Enjoy!!!

Heading to Gothenburg between xmas and new year. If anyone has any other links etc (interested in seeing stuff out of city) i'd appreciate it.

just read on that the Liseberg park is not fully operational in Nov/ Dec.
'The park is also open in November-December with a Christmas market where guests can try anything from ice skating to candied, roasted almonds, hot mulled wine and real reindeer "döner kebab". Most rides, however (including all the roller coasters), do not operate during this time.'
If the above info is correct, and most rides etc not operating then is it worth going to the park at all? Would like to go but not if nothing really open!

Just back from trip to Gothenburg. Went to the Christmas markets in Liseberg and they were lovely. We went in the evening so everything was lit up with 4.5 million lights. There was a ice rink, ice show, markets, some amusements, mulled wine (glogg), ice bar, christmas trees.... A real christmas theme. It is mainly aimed at kids with lots of things for them to do but we had a great time getting into the spirit of things. And people were also extremely friendly there.

The entire city is lit up with lights so it's a lovely time of year to visit!

Enjoy

Just back from our few days in Gothenburg and really enjoyed it. Very nice city for a weekend break.
Think as far as sightseeing and things to do etc we were there at the slightly wrong time of year - many of the places closed but we weren't that bothered!
Loads of people had said how expensive Sweden is but to be honest was fairly on a par with Dublin prices (maybe slightly more in some places but only by a fraction)
. All the pubs we were in were good craic and the locals were very welcoming. Dying to speak English so no language problems whatsoever.
All in all would recommend it and would def go back to Sweden on another break. Thanks a million for all the advice, came in very useful
