Good video camera for family usage?

Could anybody recommend a good video camera for family usage? I am a bit confused about the different formats and which format to buy? I am hoping to buy this camera in the USA as I am going on holidays there soon. All help appreciated.

3 different storage option available now for camcorders, DV Tape, DVD and HDD based.
If you are handy with PC's, the HDD versions are good. You copy the video up to the PC, edit it and then dump it onto a DVD. Some of the applications are really easy to use such as Ulead Videostudio and DVD Movie Factory.

If you don't want that hassle, then maybe DVD might be better for you.
