Hi, I'm looking to buy a rucksack as a gift for a friend. He's going to Australia for a year and will be doing a lot of travelling around. Anyone know of a place (shop or on-line) where you can get good value rucksacks. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

k2 on talbot street or army bargains on capel street , alternatively argos does a number of these as well
Just a thought...you might try and get a rucksack that has the zip on the top like a holdall. It makes it easier to pack when going from one place to the other and also means that if you are looking for something it is easier to find. It takes away the pleasure (!!!) of digging your hand deep into the rucksack and tearing everything out in the vain hope of finding something you put in there about 20 minutes before hand.

Cannot recommend Sporthouse enough...approx €100 for a rucksack when you can buy one for €30 BUT they open at the sides like a suitcase (big plus) and they have a special weave which prevents them being split open by knifes etc when backpacking........its a pack for life! and its irish made!
Arnotts have a few as well...ones that open at the sides...have handles like holdalls, straps for rucksakes but also have the trolley handle and wheels as well... so essentially three ways to carry it depending on mood...cant remember the make but were just over 100 quid
It depends what you mean by ‘good value’; these’s not much point buying a cheapo one if it breaks up. Your friend will need one with at least 65 and ideally 85 litres volume if it’s to be his only pack. There are versions that have a handle on the side so they can be carried like a regular suitcase, and/or the straps can fold in so it looks like a suitcase (which can be handy in snotty hotels that don’t like backpackers) Don’t buy one with lots of external pockets as he’ll need a lock for each one. I’ve a Lowe Alpine and one padlock can lock both the main compartment zip and the zip on the top compartment at the same time. You could try the Great Outdoors (great range but pricey), the Lowe Alpine shop in Temple Bar (is this now North Face?), or (my favourite) Outdoor Adventures in Liffey St.
Should have mentioned that these bags also have side handles and a back that zips in all the loose straps etc....

I'd like to recommend Sporthouse to the OP aswell. I backpacked around Oz with one of these a few years ago, and it's still going strong. The lady who sold it to me told me that Sporthouse manufacture bags for the Irish army. Sounds a bit suss, but I fell for it anyway ..
