Hi
There are a few of us who'd like to head to Portugal for a weeks golf. We're all pretty much beginners so therefore would be needing lessons. Also we don't have handicap certificates.
Where woud you recommend in Portugal for such a break and some sociable evening entertainment?

We palyed there last year and were asked for proof of our handicap in all the courses in villa moura so you would need to check this out. another time we stayed a little more west in a hotel garbe and this offered a few rounds of golf included in the price but you would need car hire to get to the courses but they were not as particular about handicap certs so google hotel garbe and see if they have any offers I think it might be difficult to play in villamoura without proof of handicap also the courses anr more expensive than the more western ones. I think hotel garbe is about 50 minutes from airport.

If you want lessons there is a good golf accademy near Alvor, Caviero. Ita a David leadbetter one and woukld be excellent for you.
Through them you could get to play golf at the course next door-Pinta its called. Villamoura not for you with certificate.

Vilamoura - Fabulous spot and only 20 minutes from Airport.

As a previous poster said without handicap certs you'll struggle. Even if you spoof your way past this stage on a lot of the courses there are rangers patrolling to speed up play and identify hackers. Unfortunately they can ask you to vacate the course if you're struggling.
Anyways, it's so busy beginners might feel intimidated.
Better to start on something like one of the nine-hole courses at Le Meridien Penina. These are better for beginners or kids.

Thanks for all the relpies. At least I know now where to start searching.

Pinta also has special offers after 4.00pm of half price green fees. Villamoura is definitely out for you as they are very vigilant.

Any advice re Vilamoura for those with handicap certs etc. - where to stay? where to play??who to book with etc???

we stayed in hotel du golf which was lovely a 5 min taxi from villamoura but it had offers with reduced green fee rates and free transfer to the course. It had a nice pool and was quite they were little bunglows around the pool. it does mean you have to get a taxi in and out in the evening 4 euro approx. If you google it you will get a list of hotels doing golf offers. If they are in the marina area they will be more expensive. The courses are lovely and villamoura is nice.
