Golf - error light on dash - anyone know what it means?

01 Golf 1.4 petrol.

Got a yellow warning light on the dash, of an engine block with a lightning flash going thru it, and CHECK written beneath.

What does it mean?
 
This is a check engine light or CEL. It could be a number of things, but you need to get the car to someone with diagnostic equipment ASAP to pinpoint and correct the fault(s).

Orange light, 6th from the right -

Yes the car has just had an oil leak fixed, so probably something to do with that.

I think I had this light come on in another car a few years back (also a VW) and the diagnosis said that there was an 'oil quality' issue, not an oil level, as it was topped up perfectly.
