I have a gmail account for private email, and discovered this evening it send emails, I think the term is hijacked, to some of my contacts. What does this mean, am not too well up on this kind of thing. Does this mean I have a virus & will I be able to use the email account.

My gmail account was hijacked about a year ago. What I did was simply change my password to something complex with numbers and symbols and that sorted it.

There was advice a couple of weeks ago to all gmail account holders to change passwords as there had been a security breach.

Reset my password so hopefully it won't happen. It was a bit embarrassing when friends were calling to let me know they had got mad emails from me

If you are using Gmail via the web, this should be fine... but if you are using Gmail through another email client (such as Outlook) you possibly have a virus on your local PC...
