Giving up work to look after family

Basically my wife is finishing maternity leave and will not be returning to employment as the cost of putting our children in a creche for a month outweighs her monthly take home pay.

My question is if there are any SW benefits we should apply for to help us out?

It may (or may not) be worth your while to note that your wife can earn up to (I think) €10,000 as a childminder tax free, if she can cope with more than your own kids! If it's possible you could also rent out a room in your house, again it's tax free money.

If you are on low income perhaps there may be some entitlement to Family Income Supplement.
Any other extras that are available are in the Tax system.
If you have not already transferred tour wife's tax credits to you, then now is the time to do it and also apply for the homecarers tax credit

make sure to apply to be taxed jointly as you will get the benefit of (some of) her tax credits and allowances. also as previously mentioned, claim the additional "home carer" tax credit.

thanks all

i figured that there were one or two extra entitlements we could claim

just wasnt sure what they are
