Visiting Manhattan in April. Can you advise which is clearest and easy to read map or guide book

Use the subways, its great.

Buy a map in a local bookstore. The Rough Guide to... books are excellant. I had one, it includes a map too : [broken link removed]

IMHO the ONLY book worth getting is "Eyewitness Guide to New York"

Slightly dearer than other books but invaluable for all you might want to do,
ie. eating,sleeping,going out, etc...

Hi Boxette

Spent Christmas over in Manhattan... First time there and loved it! Very easy to navigate midtown and uptown as all streets run perfectly horizontally whilst all Avenues run vertically from the eastside to west.

Downtown is a little more complex but not overly so. in the downtown area you can walk from eastside to west in 15 - 20mins and in April time it should be nice a mild to do so. Subway is $7.50 for a day pass which is excellent value as you can travel throughout all of Manhattan for that.

As another poster here mentioned, it is easy to navigate as you're either going downtown or uptown. Average Cab fare from downtown to midtown depending on time of day was approx. $12 - $15 oneway + tip of course... another 10%.

You can pick up little pocket size maps in most hotels at reception but, if you had a map of the streets and subway in advance, you'd see how simple to navigate it really is!

Enjoy!

Best way to get around is subway and walk...you see everything that way, not just whats in a guidebook.

Use the bus/subway maps, they are small and discreet. You can download them from here http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/index.html or just pick one up on a bus when you are there and remeber if you do get a bus get a transfer ticket which will be valid for the day on that route (e.g. go from upper westside to midtown, if you ask for transfer when you get on, you can then go crosstown if you need to) always handy after a day pounding the streets to get you home.

Enjoy!

Any map will do you.

It's very easy to get around manhattan. We walked an awful lot, and only took the subway a couple of times. The street system is very simple - Avenues 1-11 running up and down, and Streets run from across (e.g. you are on the junction of 7th and 42nd and you want to get to the Empire State which iirc is on 5th and 35th, you go down 7 streets and across 2 avenues). The distances involved are not huge, but bring good walking shoes as you will end up doing a lot of walking.

Downtown and the financial district is a bit different, but it's small enough that you can't get too lost.

thanks a lot for all the info. Seems like it easy peazy. Looking forward to the adventure

Get a 3 day pass or weekly pass for the Hop On/Hop Off red double decker tour bus. You will see everything and the busses are frequent.
