Getting out a rut (career going nowhere)

I am working in a boring clerical job.

I go in every morning an turn off my brain.

I did part time study over the last while. This was a challange.

It actually made work ok as my focus was on the study.

I am now thinking of even more part time study. (PHD).

I have worked in accountancy practices but the long hours were miserable so I would prefer not to go there again.

My ideal job would be 40% accountancy and 60% dealing with people and problem solving.

I might even consider doing some traveling.

I had your ideal job...Assistant to Financial Director of 16 companies and Human Resources Manager. Don't think its done today unfortunately, so you might have to choose.

I surpose what I am probably looking for is a job that combines a bit of accountancy and problem solving.

I am doing niether at the moment.

It is doing my head in. The only option with the job is further study.

The job in fairness is 9 to five. There is zero pressure. But the boredom is a killer.

If I keep it on I willl have to do more study to keep me from going mad.

what about consulting in the financial/accounting area?

If you are a permanent clerical officer, you could take a career break, go to Australia or just abroad, try to get accounting assistant or banking assistant work. Then you would have some experience when you return to Ireland. You could extend your career break, and try to get into a bank/accounts job in Ireland.

I find that being an accountant/book keeper for a small company can be very varied. You do invoicing, debt collection, accounts payable as well as monthly accounts. You deal with the customer and supplier, as well as doing the figure work.

Alternatively, you could try to get to a senior level in the govt. job (easier said than done). you could try to get a transfer to a different dept, maybe finance in your clerical officer job.

I know what a boring job feels like. For me it was doing accounts payable in a team of 50!!! I was inputting invoices all day. No variation. The work was so standardised that I didn't even have to do account reconciliations or payment runs.

I don't know where you are based, but maybe a job in MABS might be what you are looking for. Dealing mainly with people but also the number crunching is part of it- with an end result that makes a differance to people's life. I see on the MABS website a vacancy in Mayo, worth keeping an eye on it from time to time
