Getting Euro Valuation on Ring bought in US

Hi Folks!

Insurance company here want a Euro valuation on recently purchased engagement ring from US. I have looked back through previous threads on the subject. Anyone got any experience/recommendations for jewelers in Dublin city center. Only one I can see is ESL in Powerscourt Center. How long did it take? How much did it cost? Any help appreciated. Thanks
 
You need to drop your ring into McDowells, Brertons or Appleby's - they have gemologists (Weirs and Fields don't). It will cose approx 50-80 euro and some will charge 1% of the ring value. They will give you a cert for your insurance company. If you have your cert from the US it should be quick and easy. Appleby's charged me 50 euro and had it done in about 15 mins - the others have been known to take the ring for 10 days.
 
Thanks for the reply. Leaving the ring for ten days would be out of the question for something so valuable both intrinsically and financially! Charging a % of value seems ridiculous to me as it should involve similar effort to value 2 rings even if one is worth twice as much as another?

My sis in law is in the same boat wants to get a ring she got in oz valued, but she has been told not to let the ring out of her sight when getting valued as friends have heard stories about stones getting switched. Just something to be made aware off.
 
How much confidence can one (or one's insurers) have in a valuation where the valuer's fee is charged as a % of the value - surely there is an inbuilt incentive to inflate values beyond the appropriate levels?
 
Have called ESL in Powerscourt Center and they say the will do it there and then if I bring in the US Certification I got with the ring and will charge 50 Euro for the service.
US Cert shows the dollar price so this seems to me to be a no brainer for them to me. Apart from valuation I would also like to get clarification that what they say I bought actually is true and so feel that the less info I can give them the better and truer valuation i will end up with.
What about giving them the cut, clarity, colour and carat weight? Any opinions?
 
They should disregard the US valuation — you shouldn't even have to supply it — and provide some brief indication of the basis on which they estimate the ring's value (including cut, clarity, colour and carats). Check this with them by 'phone before you hand in the ring.
