Getting an overdraft

This may sound like an obvious question but how do you get an overdraft from your bank?
Do you have to apply for it or is it something that is part of the terms of your current account?
I never had one before and may need to get approx 2K quickly to finish off a renovation job at home.

Yep, just apply. The last time I did it (early 90s) it was sorted in 2 minutes over the phone. Possibly a little more formal these days but should be very straightforward.
