Get Rid of Smell of Burning

I went off to work yesterday morning and forgot to switch off a pot of ham which was simmering away on the hob.By the time I thought of it at 12.30 I was greeted to a cloud of dense smoke.I have opened windows and doors for hours but there is still a strong lingering smell. Anybody any suggestions as to ways to eliminate this.

According to the 'How clean is your house' website you could try simmering water mixed with a cup of vinegar for half an hour. Use plenty of water to make sure it doesn’t boil dry.
