Gas Fire/Heating for Sitting Room

Hi,
Several years ago, we wanted to convert the back-boiler (by open fire) central-heating system to gas. However, Bord Gais insisted on sufficient number of neighbours in our road expressing interest in having gas heating, to qualify for laying down the pipe supplying the road. So we had to install the oil boiler and tank instead.
Now, several neighbours were successful in getting the gas laid down in the road. so we missed the boat :-(
The fireplace in the sitting room has an electric fire, but we find the room quite chilly, despite the oil c/heating. We're playing with the idea of linking up with the gas mains for the purpose of having a gas fire installed in the fireplace - the fumes can go up the chimney which is not closed off.
Anyone here ever tried that?
Thanks,
Allendog

Some of the gas fires these days are great but one reservation I would have is how much it might cost to run one. I asked a plumber some time back about getting one and he felt that they were very expensive to run on a daily basis.

Perhaps something in the key post on Gas Fires might give some help.

Sounds like you need bigger radiators in your living room. It should not feel chilly if the right sizes were installed, in the right locations.
