Gas Boiler Service - too cheap?

Hi

I was looking for someone to service my boiler which hasn't been done in a couple of years. So looked through all the threads which said basically get someone registered with RGII. So I ring one guy who's away, and the next gives me a quote for €60, but can only do it in the evening. This seems way too cheap from the threads I read! What do you think? Is it legit, or will I find a rake of other charges on top? Seems a bit odd that he can only do it in the evening.

sounds like he's doing it as a nixer?
Was browsing one of the free papers recently, plenty of ads for gas boiler service. Going rate seemed to be €75 IIRC

www.servicemyboiler.com are adververtising for €49 at the east link bridge. i dont know them or anything about them sorry.
Some times what happens though is that people give a low price to get in the door and then add on extras

Be very wary of cheap gas boiler service, if it is being done properly by a fully registered service engineer there are several checks to be made which take time. Some people are in and out very quickly and cheaply but they are not doing a thorough job.

€60 or thereabouts is pretty much bang on for a cash in hand service IME. So, the decision is yours. :)

My only comment here is, if it sounds to good to be true, then it most likely is!

80-90 euro would seem to be the going rate for a proper service at the minute

Has anybody used this company for a boiler service?

I am looking for a routine boiler service, and they popped up on a google search. They seem RGI registered and above board, but €55 seems a bit cheap.....

Ask them to give you a full breakdown of what they carry out for their €55 incl vat service. I know I would not be doing it for that. Are they soundness testing the whole system and carrying out a full Annexe E check on the whole installation? You you also get a full flue gas analysis report on the boiler? Also ask how long it will take. It should be 1 hour to 1 & 1/2 hours minimum.

from their website: (note, I have no connection to this company, just looking for someone to service mine! )

Test functionality of Gas boiler & flue with boiler running.
Test appliance burner pressure.
Boiler safety check
During a boiler inspection a Service Engineer will check the integrity of the boiler in accordance with Annex C of IS 813: 2002.

My point exactly. A CHECK of the boiler only. This is a typical low price service. A proper service IMHO must include an Annexe test of the whole installation. There are too many things to go wrong in a system that could be avoided with a proper test of the integrity of the whole installation. At the very least an Annexe E should be carried out and is a gas fire is installed a spillage test should be carried out. These are tests I would normally include in a standard boiler service even when not requested. When I leave a job, I want piece of mind at the very least!

so how much would a "proper" boiler cost? and how does one find someone to do it? Bord Gais?

What is an annexe test?

I have paid €69 this year and over €100 past years and no one stayed more than an hour.............30-60 mins.

How does the ordinary punter know?

Annexe E:
- Soundness test of the installation & all connected applicances
- Check condition of all visible pipework and flexible connectors
- Check/calculate for adequate ventilation for all appliances
- Check/test effectiveness of any flue or chimney, spillage test, etc.
- Check appropriateness of all appliance locations
