Garden Privacy

Hi we are getting a patio at the moment and I am wondering how we can gain some privacy in our garden. I thought we could build a raised bed on the patio however we have been advised not to do this as it could leak soil onto the patio and ruin it. I originally wanted to plant clumping bamboo but it seems this isn't an option anymore. What sort of plants could we grown in pots on a trellis that would give some privacy? Or is there any other option? Thanks in advance

Hi Evi3, Built up deckings, raised plant beds on patios etc in the hope of some privacy have often ended up causing the opposite of what you want to happen. I know people who not only are out of communication with their next door neighbours but hope that they will evaporate somehow because of garden "privacy" issues.

A hedge will probably solve your problem, but hedges are not easy to maintain especially as you get older. Then there is the issue of whom will maintain the other side of the hedge.

I know I am not resolving your issues but my advice to you especially if you are living in a housing estate is to tred carefully as a good neighbour is a rarity and an invaluable asset into the future.

Line the raised bed with geotextile fabric to prevent this.
