Garden Fencing or other method of keeping my dog in.

Hi,

I'm living in Galway and am getting a dog from the gspca. A lady called to my house and advised that I put up some sort of fencing in my back garden to prevent the dog running away. There is already a wall in the back garden but my garden slopes upwards and this being a big dog he can jump it easily.

I was planning on getting these walls built up anyway but I was wondering if anyone knows of a shortterm and inexpensive way of fencing in the garden so the dog cant run away. Hopefully I can get the wall rebuilt sometime at the end of next month but until then I need some sort of solution.

You can buy an electric sensor device that you put around the perimeter of your garden to keep the dog in. I think it's around €250. I don't know how effective it is.
 
Depending on the dog very effective. I have seen dogs that will not go anywhere near area where the device activates but i have also seen other dogs charge past, which means the only get an instant shock and then the device is next to useless. The problem is you dont really know what way your dog will react until you have purchased one.

With all due respect to ribena & tia, ignore these posts, or if you are thinking of taking them seriously, then you need to think twice about getting a dog.

The Electric shock collar/fence is not necessary to stop a dog wandering. A spike and chain is a redneck way to control a dog.

Trellis/chicken wire run along the top of the wall will be ample until you get around to sorting it more permanently.

The GSPCA is there specifically to prevent cruelty to animals and I`m quite sure if they thought you gave any consideration to these suggestions they would not release the poor animal to you.
Hopefully you think likewise.
 
My advice is dont get a dog until you have a proper wall built. There are too many dogs roaming because their gardens are not enclosed properly, surely they will keep the dog for you until you get your back properly enclosed.

+1.

The spike and chain suggestion is one sure way to produce an aggressive dog, its a disgraceful suggestion to even make.
 
If its a big dog prone to running away neither trellis or chicken-wire will stop it. Either build up the wall or put up chain-link fencing.
 
I'm curious about how many people are objecting to the chain idea....I don;t think it's a long term solution for a permant home for the dog, but what about short term?

We go to a house down the country for 2 weeks in the summer....we were there last year when we'd just go the dog & used a rope if we had her outside for any time (mainly kept her indoors). We'll be going back this year & I planned to do the same for many reasons:
- she's not familiar with the area & we obviously don't want her to get lost
- there is livestock in the area & I don't want here upsetting sheep or cattle
- it would be very costly to completely secure the area...fine if we lived there full time, but the size of the area is about 1+ acres.

I'm not talking about all day as we will be around most of the time or bringing her with us on walks & to the beach & I was thinking about a long rope/chain....would I be horrible to do this? I don't want to have to put her into kennels as she'll already be in them for about 10 days when we travel abroad.

Wouldnt consider it cruel at all if its only for short periods of restraint - youd often see dogs tied to a post outside local shops for example while owner is in picking up a few bits.

I would consider it a fair option for a half hour here or there while waiting on the owner but no longer.

Just in my opinion dogs should not be kept at the end of a chain or rope, its not humane.

Whatever about a half hour here or there to expect a dog to live a life at the end of a chain just demonstrates complete ignorance about whats best for an animal (not saying thats what you are planning on doing).
 
OK - don't feel so bad.....we'll be with her most of the time, it would just be for those trips where she can't come with us or she just wants to be outside (she loves being outside), so probable never for more than a hour at a time. She normally sleeps outside in a kennel but would keep her indoors as I wouldn't like to leave her tied up for so long. Will probably have to rethink securing the parimeter down the road.

To the OP....is there no way you could get the wall built sooner as it seems pointless to go to the trouble of a temporary solution when you will ultimately build up the wall.....I'm sure there must be some brickie who'd be able to do it sooner rather than later given the current climate? Have to admit, I never likeld the idea of those electonic fences.
