Garage loan car with no tax - who is liable

Car is in the garage at the moment and I have a loan car from them. Noticed yesterday that the tax on the car has expired. Contacted the garage and they said dont worry, any fines will come to us. Given the time of year and the number of checkpoints on the roads, I'm concerned. Is it true what they say about the fine? Would there points on license involved, and if so, would I be done?
Thanks

Owner of the vehicle is liable for any road tax, and any penalties thereon.

A fine for non display of tax when a vehicle is parked in a public place would go to the registered owner, but if stopped by the garda I would think it’s the driver who is responsible.

I would not accept an un-taxed replacement car from a garage.

It’s not a penalty point’s offence according to this,
