G-mail problem with capacity

I have recently a problem with my g-mail account. It says that it has reached 99% capacity.

However I have since deleted quite a few e-mails in the inbox and sent folder but it still says the same 99% capacity.

I do not want to delete all my e-mails.

There is an icon up on the top page with the following message:

'You have run out of space for your Gmail account. You will not be able to send or receive any emails until you delete some items.
You can view our tips on reducing your email storage or purchase additional storage.'

What is the problem with this, or has anyone had this problem before.

GMail currently has 7G+ of storage, so its likely that its attachments that are hogging the space - go through those first of all and download any that you want to keep then delete the mails.

you probably know this ; but if you do want to keep everything you can pay for extra storage--
20 GB - $5/yr

Try some of these suggestions, especially with regard to emails with attachments, as shweeney has suggested:

Create another gmail a/c for yourself as an archive, zip up the older attachments & forward them to your archive.
