Futons - Comfort Level?

I am considering buying a futon as a sofa bed. I had one previously but it was extremely hard and uncomfortable. Sales people tell me that the old types were cotton and wool and prone to compacting whereas newer types have latex/foam inserts to prevent this. Is this just sales guff? Has anybody experience of using "newer" futons and can you live with them??

Don't think they'll ever be as comfortable as a "bed" but my one is fine...ah yes, the futon-also known as the doghouse!
 
My BIL had one and we slept on it every time we stayed with them. I loved it, nice, firm base. But the inlaws would come back and complain about that awful uncomfortable thing they were made sleep on. My husband and I always got a great sleep on it. Doesn't suit everyone.
