I (rarely) use a dial up for internet and am having this problem with the eircom one - it keeps disconnecting me after a brief interval, even with activity on the line.

Can anyone recommend a freebie dial up number?

Thanks.

ocean free

before I got broadband I used ocean on 1890923204 un/pw = oceanfree/oceanfree I dont even know if its still in operation, I just took that from an old n/w connection I had. I got rid of the landline so I cant test it.
I think sometime ago Dr. M recommended signing up for a package of unlimited local calls for 10e per month (under an hour) with a certain provider and then dialing a landline but recall reading that the providers copped on to that. As usual I cant find the post with the search.

Re: ocean free

See [broken link removed]. Not sure how up to date it is, but I've used one or two of them in the past.

Freebie diall-up disconnecting

I also have this disconnecting problem with eircom free diall-up. Is problem only with eircom only or does it happen with other providers. Why does it happen - is there technical explanation, or is it done deliberately to force you on to fixed rate diall-up system or broadband. Does it happen with fixed rate diall-up system.

Re: Freebie diall-up disconnecting

I use www.pigsback.com dial up service.
They give you 10% back of your spend in points (which you can exchange for vouchers etc).
Not bad, never have the cutting off problem some of you have on Eircom. It's 9.99 a month for 25 free off peak hours
and the peak are slightly cheaper then Eircom.
Think UTV are also okay for dial ups and NTL for Broadband (low downloads mind you).

Re: Freebie diall-up disconnecting

I've found UTV's 1890 number (1890927161 if I recall correctly - and I think that you can use any username and password) for non-subscription dial-up to be fine and reliable. I tried the elive 1891 number mentioned but couldn't get connected most of the time... :\

I found eircom to be slightly less reliable than UTV at least in terms of disconnects etc. I don't think that this is deliberate to force users to use other paid services to be honest but that's just my gut feeling. Of course if the same problem happens with other dial-up ISPs then it could be a local problem (e.g. poor line quality, very long or damaged extension cable, out of date WinModem drivers, modem dial-up hijacked by parasites etc.)...
