Free antivirus v subscription version

Hi, I have done a search and read the threads regarding available antivirus software but what I really want to know what is the main difference between the free antivirus and the fee based ones i.e. AVG, Zonealarms? I like the idea of free stuff (who doesn't?) but is it really secure enough? I do all my banking online, have online investment accounts, buy and sell online, etc, as well as 'surfing the net'. If I get the free version what else would I need to be 100% sure that I am protected. (I am cautious. I know!!)
I currently use Norton but as it is due to expire next week I am looking for an alternative as I feel it has slowed down my computer enormously. I am also planning to buy a laptop with vista preinstalled. Are there any compatability issues with the avg or Zonealarms? Thanks for any help!!

Have you read the "clean PC" and "free sofware/support" threads pinned at the top of this forum? They cover these issues in depth and provide many links already.
