Former service provider charging us years of backdated VAT

If you made a decision to use his services because he did not have to charge VAT, then I don't think you should have to pay VAT. If he has to charge VAT, then the sale price already charged must include VAT, and he will have to account for it himself.

I would think that the legal answer is that he can't go back more than 6 years.
