hi,
I am in the process of completing my husbands tax return and I am quite confused about
whether motor expenses are allowable.
He is a carpenter, who has a home office and the majority of the work that he secures is about 100 km from his home. He uses a car that has private insurance rather than commercial. I have been advised that because of this diesel, tolls, tax and insurance are not allowable expenses. It seems rather unfair as the car is used only for his business. Can anybody shed any light and confirm if this is, in fact, the case?

Thanks,
ciah.

Did you get that advice from a professional accountant or some guy down the pub?

Your husband should have business cover on his policy in case of a claim.

From a tax viewpoint the expenses are business expenses with a personal add back!

...but if he doesn't, the adequacy or otherwise of his insurance cover is not Revenue's concern and has no relevance to his tax return.

hi,
I was advised this by revenue not by some guy down the pub. I just don't want to leave us in a position where we subject to penalties and charges! thanks
