There's an inbuilt diagnostic in focuses, Google engine light Ford Focus and you'll find out how to do it (start the car with your hand on the mileage reset button and you'll get codes) and what they mean.
My light came on recently and I had to replace the leads, the spark plugs and the coil pack before it would go off and the car would run properly.
