Flying 1 Way To Oz - Stopping Off In The US - Go With Trailfinders?

Myself, MrsF & BabyF are emigrating to Oz. At the moment I'm looking to book a 1 way Flight over. We've a bit of time to spend before we get there & I've never been to the US. If it wasn't for BabyF we'd be keen on a bit of South East Asia. At the moment we're thinking of flying to New York on to San Francisco & then on to Melbourne. I was in Trailfinders 2 weeks back. At the time we were looking at flying into Los Angeles, driving to San Francisco & then flying on to Melbourne. It worked out about 1100 Euro for the adults. I didn't book it at the time as it entailed a flight from Dublin to London and then onto Los Angeles. I was hoping to fly direct. If I check out flights myself, Trailfinders still seems to come up trumps on prices. Is it best to go with these guys or does anyone have any other self booking tips?

Booked - Dublin > London > Washington > San Francisco > Sydney > Melbourne for 2500 Euro for the 3 of us.
We'll be stopping off in a few places for sightseeing.
