Laminate is generally more hard-wearing and longer lasting that most floor coverings. Indeed, some of it is close to bullet proof!

Semi-solid is made up of a top layer of a few mils of your wood of choice, then alternating layers of lesser wood to form the required thickness. It is more stable, and generally cheaper than solid wood. It is a lot more prone to damage than laminate, but as you mentioned, it can be sanded to restore the surface.

Sanding is a big enough job though, requiring the hire of special sanders. Sanding semi-solids requires care and attention, a little too long in one spot and you blow right through the top layer.

While we're on the subject, how long after installing laminate is it safe to walk all over it?

if it's not click laminate, safer to wait til the glue dries before heavy traffic.

hi Leo.

we have semi solid in our hall and tv room. I have noticed it is now starting to come up in certain places. I have checked along the walls and it does not seem to be touching them. The top part of one plank has come away and I need to replace it. Unfortunately it is about 4 planks into the room.

Any tips???

Damian

Hi Damian. Sounds like the veneer is delaminating from the engineered base? Did it get wet at any stage? How long is it down, and what kind of guarantee did you get? Unfortunately, it'll be very difficult to rectify this satisfactorily without replacing the affected boards.
