Hi,

I'm looking for opinions on how much this would cost.

Is laminate the cheapest option? I'm not looking for floors to last forever, just nice light-looking and easy to clean floors. I'm on a tight budget so nothing expensive.

Also, is it possible to get normal lino (as opposed to vinyl)? I thought this would suit for the kitchen/utility area. I made some enquiries and was quoted crazy prices (€60 per sq m) for some fancy type.

Thanks in advance,

g

laminate is the cheapest timber but im sure you can get lyno cheaper that timber

proper lino is a specialist product these days bought in large amounts and used in hospitals, offices and other industrial-type buildings. It is almost indestructible and extremely hardwearing - designed to do service withouit wearing out in high traffic areas for years. It's expense reflects the fact that once laid, its supposed to be down for a looooong time! Laying it is tough because it is so hard and it feels cold and hard underfoot - only a specialist floor layer will do it for you.

If you don't want to use cushioned vinyl (I can understand why you wouldn't), and don't want to put down tiles, then you could get that type of smooth stone type flooring that is often seen in hotels, car showrooms or shopping centres, which is a neat job but also expensive.

Thanks to all of you for the replies. I think I'll be heading to Des Kelly's to check out any cheap options be it vinyl or laminate. I'd love to go for something environmentally friendly but don't think the budget will stretch to it at the mo!

Thanks again,

g

What about good old carpet! Maybe not so easy to clean but nice on the feet and warmer...

Lam floors are cheap but in my opinion the very cheap versions look very cheap..

Laying cost may need to be considered - carpet wud be cheaper to lay than lam flooring...

Are ur floor boards upstair T+G? These can be varnised and look good and this wud b a very cheap way to sort the upstairs..

Best of Luck

Thanks sidzer - I'm not wild at the prospect of all that hoovering! It's meant to be Mr G's job but he doesn't like it much either

I know what you mean though and I'll definitely compare the total cost for all options for product + fitting.
