Hi
I'm considering buying a property that has had some damage done to the walls, it looks as if someone has put their fist or foot through the plasterboard in places, just wondering could I cut the plaster board back to the fixing batons then patch in some new plasterboard and have a competent plasterer skim it, would it look patchy and a botched job or would it be invisible once painted assuming a good paint job

That's the perfect way to fix it, if done right, you won't be able to tell there was ever a hole.

If you fancy giving the job a go yourself, Polycell do a pre-mixed plaster repair filler that comes in tubs that is very easy get a good smooth finish on and sands well if required.

You could do that, but if theres lots of holes and damage then it may be better in the long term to install new plaster board and just reskim the entire lot.
You can also get the plasterer to reskim over the existing plaster skim coat. This will save the need to replace all the plasterboard.
The plaster will need to roller on a coat of thistlebond or febond, then thats left to dry and then the new skim coat is applied.

The thislebond and febond is a blue coloured gritty paint solution and this gives a "sctratch coat" so that the new skim coat can stick to the old skim coat.
