If I buy property abroad, as a foreign-resident (Irish national) and come back to Ireland in say, 2 years, do I qualify as a first time buyer?

For stamp duty purposes - no.

For owner occupier mortgage interest relief purposes - yes, if you are buying a home.

are you sure about that clubman?
the revenue site clearly states
'A person who has previously purchased a house, either in Ireland or abroad, is not entitled to claim first time buyer relief.'

riviera, if I where you I would double check your question with the revenue, they are generally very helpfull

Where? Note that the use of the term "FTB" in relation to owner occupier mortgage interest relief is misleading and does not clarify that even non FTBs may be entitled to "FTB" preferential rates of relief.

Revenue may not know or may give incorrect/incomplete info. If you want authoritative advice on this then you will need to talk to an accountant/tax advisor.
