What is the function of a fireplace? Is it possible to have an open fire but not fit a fireplace. Thanks.

Assuming you mean the part of the fireplace on the floor, it is top stop your house burning down when hot embers jump out of the fire.

No I don't mean the hearth, I mean the fireplace - the structure attached to the wall!

Where does the fire go :)

Once if is gas you can do a lot!

Up the chimney!!! Obviously I didn't explain this very well. I want to have an open fire but just want to have a "hole in the wall" without the fireplace bit that is attached to the wall - hope that makes sense.

Makes perfect sense to me. You probably only need a strip of metal or something around the actual hole so that the walls don't scorch and stain (and a hearth beneath) but other than that, you don't need a fireplace at all, nope. You probably don't even need that strip of metal if the fire is set far back enough - you can just have wall surround.

That's what I thought but just wanted to check with the experts! Thanks for that.

While I'm sure all who answered you are well intentioned, I doubt your insurance company will take comfort in the fact you consulted the experts from AAM!! ("if" you're house burns down)

My sis got a wood burner thingie and have to say I was inpressed, seems to use less wood, has controllable heat and little mess (but I only saw it in use once!!)

Less talk please of houses burning down - I'm a responsible soul, please don't worry on my account.

A fireplace surround is not a requirement for insurance! OP, I understand what you mean - you're asking if you have to have a tiled/slate surround around your "fireplace" (i.e. the hole where the fire goes) and the answer is "no". I tried searching for pictures of what I think you mean but couldn't find any (prob not likely to find on fireplace sites!)
