Finished college, injured, entitled to?

My sister has just finished her degree in college. She injured her hand then and is still unauthorised to work. She should be okay in the next week or so. Problem is she only has a 2007 P60 and some credits from Saturday work for this year. She is now looking for work in a permanent role. Should she be entitled to benefits and if so what?

She may not have the required PRSI contributions for benefits and may need to try for means tested allowances. She should just drop into her local SW office, bring some documentation (e.g. P45, P60, PPSN, certificate stating that she is unfit for work etc.) and see what they say about possible entitlements. www.welfare.ie has a lot of info about different payment schemes and qualification criteria etc.

She should at least be lodging her illness certs. with SW to preserve future entitlements. She should make an Illness Benefit claim so that it can be decided whether she has the required PRSI record to get paid.

She needs 39 paid in total, plus 39 paid/credited in 2006 year (or 26 in 2006, 26 in 2007). She would have also paid a PRSI contribution for the Saturday work. She will not be able to claim a means-tested allowance for this as Disability Allowance is based on the illness likely to last 12 months or more.

If she is certified fit for work soon, she could claim means-tested Jobseeker's Allownance if her PRSI does not cover her for Jobseeker's Benefit.

An urgent visit to her SW office is required to suss out her options!

Thanks for that. She has her illness certs all lodged. She doesn't have 2006 PRSI contributions so I will tell her to see about the means tested Job seekers allowance.

Get her to ask about these (sections 4 and 11 in her case) when applying. She might still be entitled to Illness Benefit/Jobseeker's Benefit
