Finding an Architect

Myself and partner are in the planning stages of designing a house. We have a site in Carlow and we were originally going to design our own house competely and get a draftsman to draw it up, but now we're looking at an architect, while incorporating our own ideas.

Would anyone have suggestions on how to go about finding an architect?

Hi Suzieb,

Welcome to AAM.

If you run the search option in this forum only you may find a recommendation for an architect.

As has been mentioned many times on AAM you also need to be careful who you engage as it would appear that anyone can call themselves an architect.

Go down to your council planning office and look at a
few SUCCESSFUL planning applications RECENTLY GRANTED
in the area you want to build. You can't get a better recommendation
than a recent successful application.;)

in the golden pages there is a list of RIAI listed architects in your area. try any of these.
also, talking to friends/colleagues about experiences they have had is very useful.
have a look in magazines such as Architecture Ireland, House, you'll find a good selection in good bookshops and newsagents. see if you like any of the houses featured and make contact with these architects.
also, look up their websites to see if what they do interests you.
above all, make sure you pick an architectural practice that you can get on with, go in and meet them, see what their design philosophy is like.
