I have recently bought a significant share holding in my company.Prior to this I was a director with no holding. To do this I remortgaged my home and I was wondering would I be able to get Tax relief on this borrowing. I refer to your artice in todays Independent , where you mention this.

What Indo article are you referring to (please post a link if possible) and who are you referring to (Brendan?)? If you remortgaged your home to buy shares then you certainly can't claim owner occupier mortgage interest relief on the loan interest since this only applies to loans used to buy your PPR. I'm not aware of any other tax relief that might apply either but I'm no tax expert.

There is relief available to employees / directors that purchase shares in their own company.

The relief is limited to about €6,000 over 5 years and is confined to non-quoted / listed shares only

The relevant original statue is here [broken link removed]

Further info here ([broken link removed]) with ammendments to Section 479 throughout the years

From my experience, and from others I know, a number of Revenue staff are not au fait with this relief; confirmation of the relief and subsequent refunds may take longer than normal

Whether any relief of interest on borrowings for a share purchase is allowable ? I don't know - you should consult either your or the company's accountant for a definitive view
