Filling out application forms for jobs

Hi,

I don't know if this is a stupid question but if there is a specific application form for a job instead of asking you to send in a CV, is it ok to handwrite the application form?

Thanks

It is usual now to type up specific application forms. Most people's (mine at the top of the class) handwritting leaves a lot to be desired.

I would have thought that handwriting is fine if it's a paper form. Not sure how you'd type up an pre-printed application form without having a manual typewriter, and even then it's not easy to get alignments etc correct.

Make a load of copies of the form before you start filling it out so that you can get any mistakes out of the way, and get someone else to read over it/spell check it before writing out the final version

That being said, if you have a soft copy of the form in editable format, I'd usually type the information into those, being careful not to screw up the page layout.

If the application form is in a format that can be filled in (e.g. MS Word format), then it is probably best to fill it in. Mind you, some form designers (e.g. those on publicjobs.ie) seem to design forms which look very pretty, but are extremely difficult to fill in. I'd swear that the person who designed the forms never tried filling it out.

Thanks for responses. The form I was filling out was a pdf and I couldn't type it. There was hardly any space in the different sections and it was a nightmare trying to fill it in by hand!

FoxIt reader will let you type over PDFs before printing.

Another option is to "print" to an image file, load it into Word as a background image, and type over it. This also works with paper forms, if you scan them first.
