Her indoors is thinking about buying a 2002 Fiat Stilo. Does anyone have any experience good/bad or indifferent about this car? Thanks for any views you may express.

don't do it buy a corrolla/golf/focus instead

Fix
It
Again
Tomorrow

Mind you I would imagine it is as cheap as chips.
Check for signs of head gasket problems.
Fiats seems to go through them, a cousin has had the HG done twice on a punto.

Fiat have a bad rep and loose there value. Friend had a Bravo nothing but trouble looked good but that was about it! Everything that could go wrong did spent more fixing it than he paid for it!

I hear what you're saying lads-I wouldn't be a great fan of FIAT myself-but any specific comments about this particular car?

No major head gasket problems on 16V Fire engine.

The problems mentioned above do not affect the Stilo.
It has it's own collection of problems especially the earlier cars from 01,02 and 03 which are
Airbag light due to pasenger seat on three door model.
six speed box.
air-con
and traction control electronic issues.

If the car you view doesn't have these issues then you are on to a bargain and because everyone is giving the car a bad reputation you can afford to get a lower milage fresh car for small money. Don't buy high miler - the difference in price isn't enough to justify the penny pinching.

fiatforum.co.uk should list all the problems specific to this model.

Honest John has a few things to say about this car
Check it out..

Good Luck

Unreliable - would be much more inclined, as another poster suggested, to go for a corrolla or golf.

Avoid, buy an older Corolla, Focus,Golf etc for the same money.
Will be hard to shift afterwards and reliablity will be an issue.

We had a stilo and found it impossible to sell on, and we were selling way below the market value. Ended up trading in and losing big time

This probably sums it up, if you buy it cheap in the first place, and don't want to sell it in 2 or 3 years time, then maybe, I have no experience with the Stilo, but I have owned fiat's in the past and they've caused trouble ,mainly electric/electronic problems. if it was my money id buy a focus or collora or maybe even yaris, if size is not an issue.

I'm actually thinking of buying one second-hand in the new year but I WILL NOT pay big money for it as I am 100% certain it will be worth next to nothing after three years and I'll go for the lowest milage one I can get after having it checked out by a specialist.
It's the only way to approach purchasing it - It's a bargain if you go in with eyes wide open. If not it's a money pit even if it is 100% reliable.

Focus, Golf and Corolla are too expensive secondhand for what you get.

Lovely car, tons of room. 1.2 version has more power than a 1.4 golf, with benefit of lower tax and insurance. Steering is very light (and can be made lighter with "city" button) so easy to drive and park. Dipole's list of issues to look out for are spot on, if you get a bad one it never leaves you alone, but get a good one and you'll have no problems.

If it's the 2 door you're looking at I also think it looks gorgeous

Keep away from fiats - they'll break your heart. Resale value is desperate on them. Get a toyota.

More appropriate is get anything else.

Toyotas are ok. Reliable but soleless. Volume models are dynamically average. Residuals are mixed.

All the previous posts should show you that Fiat have a bad rep ... use it to your advantage. A quick look at carzone.ie shows prices for 2002 models run from €6,250 to €11,750. I'd look at the €6 - €7k cars and offer €4,000 for whichever one you'd found was the best for you. These people won't have too many calls about their cars so may be quite willing to negotiate. Any that aren't, well, their loss.

consider this,
would you buy a Ferrari if you had the money ?
and who owns and makes the Ferrari ?

Fiat
it's an amazing world
