Faulty goods have to be returned - Can I get postage costs back?

Hi all,

I bought a DVD recorder online and it turns out the product is faulty. It needs to be returned and I imagine the cost of postage and packaging and recorded delivery will amount somewhat.

The company isnt too far away from me, so I suggested to them I could drop it to them. They said fine, and I asked would I get a receipt that I dropped it into them and they said no.
Could I get them to sign my own piece of paper proving I dropped something off there? Would this be any use if they told me they didnt receive it?

Also, do I have any rights in getting the company to pay for part of the postage if I decide to post it? I understand the recorded delivery is for my benefit, but would I be entitled to get some form of postage compensation?

Part of me thinks no to this on the grounds that if I bought something in a shop and it was damaged, then on returning it I couldn't go looking for the cost of the petrol to drive there and back!

Looking forward to your comments,

Kevin

Put on motorbike gear, and deliver it to receiption. Hand over a clipboard to the receptionist, and she'll sign for it.
