Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

In all seriousness(well almost) does anyone know how two major financial institution got such names? I know fannie does not have the same connotations in the us as here but even still I cant see a financial institution here calling itself Paddy or Biddy..so what gives?

AS much as they are daft names (the US is famous for it) isn't it so sad that problems in one countries economy is able to affect us all?

In an ideal world I would love the US Gov and people to pick up the cost of the crash of these 2 companies, rather than the rest of us all over the world. But then I suppose Ireland would never have gotten out of 3rd world poverty if we had to do it on our own.
