Family Law & Settlement Meetings

Hello. I am involved in a marital separation situation, and both solicitors are now proposing a settlement meeting. No proceedings have been launched by either side.Because there are pensions involved, any agreement will have to be ruled in court.

My solicitor is proposing that a barrister be present, to assist the ruling in court of any agreement, and also to have ground work done for any judicial separation if agreement is not possible (assuming same barrister is available for any future court date).

I am a bit concerned re having barristers involved, as I feel this will ratchet up costs, and if a settlement is not agreed, will result in a lot of unnecessary expense. Is it necessary to have barrister(s) at settlement meeting in the absence of proceedings ? Can the solicitors not just negotiate with each other? Also, how do settlement meetings work/ can you have more than one?

Thank you in advance for any help at this stressful time.

If no proceedings then no need for barrister or having it ruled in court
Both parties can execute a separation agreement
