Fallen Leaves - what is the best tool to collect etc.?

Hi,

I bought my new home last year that has a large garden with about 20 mature trees in it. Last Autumn I had to spend a lot of effort raking and collecting the fallen leaves. This year I invested in a 'blower' head for my Stihl combi tool, which helps to put the leaves into piles, but I still have the job of collecting and disposing of them. I am now considering a vacuum/shredder tool where I can disperse the mulched leaves immediately around my garden.
Can anyone recommend a tool for the job? It would need to run on petrol and have a large bag.

Any help is 'mulch' appreciated ;-)

Have you thought about just leaving the leaves in situ and not collecting them, it is a really good way to encourage wildlife into your garden.
If your not using the garden in the winter does it matter if the leaves are there? You can leave them rot down a bit and then put them on your compost heap later in the year.

I use an electric vacuum shredder(Aldi) which works fine on tarmac/decking and solid surfaces (when leaves are dry). Useless on the lawn so it's a lawnmower/rake and wheelbarrow there.

The leaves will smother and kill the grass if the op does this.

lawn mower won't handle large amounts...

It will if the layer of leaves is light and you stay on top of the task but the mower is no good for leaves raked in to piles. I agree with Stapeler that blower/ vac machines are useless on grass but fine for tarmac/decking and solid surfaces. I have a similar model to http://www.woodiesdiy.com/productdetail.aspx?pid=7866&loc=P&catid=102.13 (this one) that I use on paving but it's mainly the blower function that I use.

Sorry I this is what I meant

Thanks for all your help. Tommorrow i am renting a blower/vacuum tool to give it a go and see how it works.
