Eyesight standards for driving

My dad has cataracts and was recently told by his optician about 4 weeks ago that he may not meet the legal eyesight standards for driving. The optician did not provide any follow up advice re contacting GP etc, and did not specifically say that he should not drive.

Rather than getting a follow up opinion / clarification my dad has stuck his head in the sand and thinks there's no reason for him not to continue driving, despite the legal obligations and obvious risk of an accident.

I'm just wondering if this is something that any of you have had to deal with, and if so how you went about it. Tempted just to steal his car keys...
 
He really needs to take it seriously. He should contact the optometrist and ask for his vision test results. He should then see his GP and find out if he meets the requirements. If not, then he 100% should not drive. I think the only option is to be open and honest about it - poor vision on the roads can lead to serious injury.
 
+1 above most emphatically.

Also, he might invalidate his motor insurance. Such a medical issue probably constitutes a "material fact" to be disclosed at renewal. The duty of disclosure revives at renewal. Saying nothing may well constitute non-disclosure and invalidation of the policy.
